Historisch drama van de hand van Raúl Ruiz (MISTÉRIOS DE LISBOA), geregisseerd door zijn weduwe, Valeria Sarmiento. Deze epische film toont de gebeurtenissen nadat het Franse legervan Napoleon onder veldmaarschalk Massena in de Serra do Buçaco is verslagen door het Engels-Portugese leger onder aanvoering van de Britse generaal Wellington.
Ondanks hun overwinning zijn de Portugese en Engelse troepen genoodzaakt zich terug te trekken op de zwaarbewapende en duchtig versterkte verdedigingslinie van Torres Vedras. De overmacht aan Franse zijde is te groot voor een rechtstreekse confrontatie in het veld. Gelijktijdig met de terugtrekking organiseert het Engels-Portugese commando de evacuatie van het gehele gebied gelegen tussen het slagveld en de linie van Torres Vedras. Het is een enorme operatie, volgens de tactiek van de verschroeide aarde, die geen ander doel dient dan de bevoorrading van de Franse troepen onmogelijk te maken.
Dit verwoeste, desolate landschap is het decor waartegen de lotgevallen van verschillende personages uit alle sociale lagen van de bevolking zich afspelen - soldaten en burgers, mannen, vrouwen, kinderen. Op de huid gezeten door het oprukkende Franse leger spoedt de massa vluchtelingen zich voort onder verschrikkelijke weersomstandigheden. Sommigen zijn er alleen op uit om het vege lijf te redden, anderen zijn tot op het bot gemotiveerd om weerstand te bieden aan de indringers ten einde hen uit het land te verdrijven. Weer anderen zien in de chaos een uitgelezen kans om hun basisinstincten te volgen en de daaruit voortkomende behoeften te bevredigen. Iedereen, ongeacht zijn of haar motieven, volgt een pad dat naar de linie van Torres leidt. Daar op die plek vindt de definitieve veldslag plaats en zal het lot over ieder van hen beslissen.
Deze Portugese inzending voor de Oscars van 2014 kent een ijzersterke, internationale cast met hoofdrollen van Marisa Paredes en John Malkovich en kleine bijrollen van Catherine Deneuve, Isabelle Huppert, Michel Piccoli en Melvil Poupaud.

Despite the victory, Portuguese and British are forced to retreat from the enemy, numerically superior, in order to attract them to Torres Vedras, where Wellington had built fortified lines hardly surmountable. Simultaneously, the Anglo-Portuguese command organizes the evacuation of the entire territory between the battlefield and the lines of Torres Vedras, a gigantic burned land operation, which prevents the French from collecting supplies. This is the setting for the adventures of a multitude of characters from all social backgrounds - soldiers and civilians, men, women and children, young and old - to the daily routine torn by war and dragged through hills and valleys, between ruined villages, charred forests and devastated crops. Highly persecuted by the French, already tormented by an unmerciful weather, the mass of fugitives continues to move forward clenching the teeth, just to save their skin, loaded with tenacious will to resist the invaders and retreat them from their country. Or even hoping to take advantage of the disarray to satisfy their basic instincts. All of them, whatever nature or motivations - the idealistic young lieutenant Pedro De Alencar, Clarissa Warren, the malicious little English girl, the shady dealer Penabranca, the vindictive Sergeant Francisco Xavier or the lusty prostitute Martírio, all gather by different paths to the lines of Torres, where the final battle will decide the fate of each one of them.
